Exam Name: Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS) Gazetted Probationers Examination

Eligibility Criteria 📘

  • Citizenship: Indian Citizen
  • Domicile: Candidate must be a resident of Karnataka or fulfill the Karnataka domicile requirements.

Educational Qualification 🎓

A candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized University.

Age Limit (as of the date specified in the official notification) 🎯 :

  • Minimum Age: 21 years.
  • Maximum Age:
  • General Merit (GM): 35 years.
  • Category 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B: 38 years.
  • Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Category-1: 40 years.

Exam Paper Pattern in Detail 📊

The KAS exam comprises three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and a Personality Test (Interview).

Preliminary Examination (Objective Type – Multiple Choice Questions)

Papers: Two papers (Paper-I and Paper-II) of 200 marks each..

Negative Marking: 0.25 marks are deducted for every incorrect answer.

  • Current events of National and International importance.
  • Humanities: Indian History, Indian Economy, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity, etc.
  • Indian National Movement.
  • General Science and Technology.
  • General Mental Ability.

📘 Paper II (General Studies):

  • Current events of State importance.
  • History of Karnataka.
  • Geography of Karnataka.
  • Economy of Karnataka.
  • Polity of Karnataka.
  • Karnataka Art, Culture, Literature.
  • Environmental Studies.
  • Rural Development and Panchayat Raj in Karnataka.
  • General Mental Ability (data interpretation, logical reasoning, analytical ability).
Main Examination (Written Examination)
  • Papers: A total of 7 papers.
  • Qualifying Papers: Kannada and English (150 marks each). Candidates must score a minimum of 35%.
  • Merit-ranking Papers: General Studies 1, General Studies 2, General Studies 3, General Studies 4, and an Essay (Kannada or English).

Key Update: Optional subjects have been entirely removed from the KAS Mains examination.

Personality Test (Interview)
  • Marks: 25 marks.
  • Purpose: To assess the candidate’s mental caliber, social traits, and knowledge of current affairs.
  • Final Merit List: Prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Main Examination (1250) and the Personality Test (25), for a total of 1275 marks.

Physical requirements

While the general KAS exam does not have a physical test for all posts, the position of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) has specific physical standards.

Physical Standards for DySP :

  • Height:
  • Male: Minimum 163 cm
  • Female: Minimum 150 cm
  • Chest:
  • Male: Minimum 79 cm (unexpanded), with a 5 cm expansion
  • Female: Minimum 74 cm (unexpanded), with a 5 cm expansion
  • Vision:
  • Distant Vision: 6/6 and 6/9 (better and worse eye) with or without glasses.
  • Near Vision: 0/6 and 0/8 (better and worse eye).
  • Color blindness, squint, or any morbid eye condition is a disqualification.
  • Hearing: Candidates must undergo specific hearing tests (Rinner’s Test, Webber’s Test, and a test for vertigo).
  • Physical Disqualifications: Knock knees, bow legs, flat feet, and varicose veins are listed as physical disqualifications.
  • Physical Endurance Test: A walking test is required:
  • Male: 25 km walk to be completed within 4 hours.
  • Female: 14 km walk to be completed within 4 hours
